Our History

The Portland Raging Grannies was founded in 2011. Founding members included many who were associated with the West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Southwest Portland, which provided initial meeting space. Inspired by the work of the Seattle Raging Grannies, this group started attending rallies associated with the Occupy movement.

As membership expanded beyond the founding group, meetings shifted to the homes of members and the structure of the group began to be formalized (see our Guidelines).  During the early years, Grannies attended protests and rallies focused on healthcare for all and environmental protection. As our membership grew, so too did our interests.

There are now close to fifty members from across the metropolitan Portland area, and we meet in community rooms made available by various organizations.  We appear at rallies and protests promoting peace, social justice, and environmental, women’s, indigenous, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights.  We are also active in calling and writing our representatives at the local, state, and federal levels to make sure they pay attention to and take action on important issues.
