Reflections

These reflections are timeless and aren’t linked to any particular event; instead, the words contained here are the thoughts of our members and quotes from others that capture our thinking about the various issues that affect us all.

World Beyond War Declaration of Peace.

The Portland Raging Grannies endorse this “World Beyond War Declaration of Peace.” Individuals can go to http://worldbeyondwar.org/individual/ and sign the pledge.

I [We] understand that wars and militarism make us less safe rather than protect us, that they kill, injure and traumatize adults, children and infants, severely damage the natural environment, erode civil liberties, and drain our economies, siphoning resources from life-affirming activities. I [We] commit to engage in and support nonviolent efforts to end all war and preparations for war and to create a sustainable and just peace.

Them and Us
by Portland Raging Granny, Linda Schmoldt

I used to say, “I’m fine
but the world is going to hell
in a handbasket.”
Fine is less and less.
No longer them and us.
Beware has jumped the fence.
It’s all us.

Blessing
by Portland Raging Granny, Sulima Malzin

It can be this way sometimes
even in the rain or in a world
where every war is always lost.

Friends gather for a visit no one planned.
We talk and touch, brew a pot of tea.
A narrow band of sun travels trillions of miles
to dance on the rims of our cups.

All at once in the quiet we are holding peace
in our hands.
